The Jekyll Island Club is a luxury resort hotel in Jekyll Island, GA that was restored in 1985.
It was originally a private club on Georgia’s coastline. It was founded in 1886 and opened in 1888 when members of a hunting and recreation club purchased the club for $125,000.
The club thrived in the early 20th Century when many of the wealthiest families (Morgans, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts) of the world came to visit the island.
Due to complications in World War II, the club shut down. In1947, the club was purchased from the state of Georgia for $675,000.
The state tried operating it as a resort, but failed due to finances and the complex was closed in 1971. It was designated a historic landmark in 1978.
After the reopening in 1985, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel remains a luxury hotel still today, and is an official member of the Historic Hotels of America
